She's the Bean Boss now! We chatted with Hannah about the brand new coffee program. What do you do at Roadmap? I mainly manage the coffee shop and all things involved with that! I also help with a lot of the larger events like the Anniversary Party, Oktoberfest, Detour Fest, etc. What excites you most about the new coffee program at Roadmap? Expanding our community. When we opened the taproom, we always said we wanted to be our customers' second living room, and what better way to do that than adding coffee to the mix? What's your go-to coffee order? Lately it's just been a simple oat milk latte with some raw sugar sprinkled in. If I'm wanting some more caffeine, I'll do a Dirty Chai. What other experience do you have working in coffee? I worked as a barista throughout high school and college in both Seattle, WA and Pittsburgh, PA - including becoming a store manager by the end. What's the best coffee you've ever tasted? One of the first times that I really remember getting into coffee was when I started at Coffee Tree Roasters in Pittsburgh and had the Vienna Roast for the first time. I loved that coffee and would always put it on when it was my turn to choose the drip rotation. I also feel like it's a roast you don't see too often. Locally, I can't get enough of the Earl Grey iced matcha from Drippy’s Coffee. If you have the aux cord at the coffee shop, what tunes are you playing? What do you do at Roadmap? The thing I love about working at Roadmap, is that I get to wear many hats. The biggest thing I do here is learn and it’s a huge part of what I love most about my job. If you want to get technical, as the Head Brewer, I get to make all of the delicious beer we serve here. From recipe development, to fermentation management, conditioning, and packaging, everything behind that yellow curb is my domain. I have spearheaded our sensory program alongside our taproom manager, Chris, and get to work with Dustin on the distribution and sales side of things. I make sure our draft lines are clean and well-maintained and that the beverages our patrons receive are to standard and of high quality. What’s your favorite beer style? This changes pretty consistently, but at the moment, I find myself really into Kolsch for its simplicity and West Coast IPA for its complexity. What's your hidden, non-brewing related talent? I love creative writing, but I guess being talented at something like that will always be subjective. I took creative writing classes, was the copy editor for our yearbook, and took journalism. It’s still something I love doing to this day. What other experience do you have working in the industry? I started bartending at the Growler Exchange and Second Pitch Beer Co., quickly learned that brewing was something I loved, and started volunteering on my days off. I’m currently the Chapter Leader for the San Antonio Pink Boots Society, alongside Hannah, Co-Owner and Director of Coffee, and have been in that role since January of 2024. Give me the top three beers you’re most proud of brewing at Roadmap. Oh, Nellie! is our Czech Dark Lager that I’ve been tweaking and perfecting for about a year and a half now. I’m very proud of this beer and how it’s developing. This beer is also named after my Black Lab, Nellie, so it’s pretty dang special. Road Less Traveled is our Japanese Rice Lager that we did in collaboration with Imperial Yeast using their new Kanpai yeast strain and a new-to-us hop variety, Perle. It was everything I wanted it to be - floral, citrusy, and bright. It’s always risky (but fun!) using a new product, and this was a big release for Detour Fest, so I’m very happy that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. Alright, Alright, Alright is our house Pilsner, and although this is an OG Roadmap brew, it takes a lot of time and care to make a consistent product that our customers and peers love. What do you do at Roadmap? I manage the taproom, take care of various business-related tasks such as payroll, inventory management, etc., and I also handle private events at the brewery. What’s your favorite part about your job? Getting the opportunity to work with our amazing front of house staff. We have the best team in the entire city, hands down, and I take pride in that. We also get to work with beer every day, which is pretty cool. What's your favorite beer style? This is a moving target. At the moment though, I would have to say any type of dark lager such as a Schwarzbier or a Czech Dark. What are your hobbies outside of work? I enjoy watching professional darts in my free time. I am also lucky enough to have the opportunity to judge beer competitions. I just got back from Calgary where I judged the Canada Beer Cup and I also had the pleasure of judging at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Favorite horror movie? The original Halloween movie from 1978. There is something unsettling about Michael Myers. He is pure evil just for the sake of being evil. No other reason. Rob Zombie ruined this with his interpretation in 2007, but that’s a topic for another day. What’s more likely for you: hitting a 20 yard field goal in an NFL game, or catching a fly ball in an MLB playoff game? Without a doubt, it would be catching a fly ball in an MLB playoff game. You may think you know a lot about him, but there are some surprises behind that backwards cap. What do you do at Roadmap? My role at Roadmap has certainly evolved over the last seven plus years - I started out as our only brewer in production and was also bartending every night, but nowadays I am a weird combination of Director of Operations, marketing, accounting, human resources and maintenance. I make sure the overall brand and the business stay true to our original vision, making the big decisions and day-to-day small ones. What job duty of yours would surprise customers? I get the question "Who does your marketing?" a lot and people are always surprised that I answer "me." It's not always the case that an owner runs that department but when I largely gave up my creative outlet in the brewhouse, I had to keep it somehow. I don't necessarily do all the visual assets (labels, pictures, etc.) but big picture marketing message and brand is something I take a lot of pride in. Oh yeah, and fixing things - I literally just fixed the bathroom sink before answering this. What's your favorite Thanksgiving side? Green bean casserole! My not-so-hot take on Thanksgiving is that turkey is probably the sixth best thing on the table. (Behind green bean casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and buttered crescent rolls.) What’s your favorite beer style? I go through waves, but somehow always come back to light and hoppy. West Coast IPA or Hoppy Pils are where I'm at right now. What’s your dream vacation? I've been lucky to travel a ton, but have never really done central Europe (Germany, Czech Republic, Austria). I love the idea of hoping on a train and getting off in the next town where they've got their own culture. Plus, the beer culture doesn't hurt either. Which brewery that you haven’t visited yet is at the top of your list? The easy answer would be Pilsner Urquell, but my real answer is probably Branch & Bone Artisan Ales in Dayton, OH. I've probably been to 1,000+ breweries on two different continents and found the best part of any brewery is the people passionately running the place. Justin and the crew in Dayton are some of my favorite people in the business to hang out with and I regret that I still haven't made it to their place yet. Oh yeah, and their beer is good too!
